Flourish51

Flourishing by design.

An innovation studio on a mission to help the world flourish—by design

DESIGN WITH SOUL

Flourish51 is a innovation studio integrating well-being science into human-centered design.

We help you design systems for life & work where flourishing is both the soul and the outcome.

"Flourishing is the relative attainment of a state in which all aspects of a person's life are good — including the contexts in which that person lives."

Harvard’s Global Flourishing Study

Flourish51

OUR VISION

A world oriented toward flourishing — galvanized by the 51 by 51 movement one of the most ambitious public health goals of our time:

51% of the world flourishing by 2051.

OUR MISSION

To unite the science of well-being with human-centered design by empowering people of all ages, organizations and communities to become creative designers of their own flourishing.

OUR VALUES

Diversity

We champion diversity — across cultures, communities, and ecosystems — as the essential condition from which all flourishing grows.

Integrity

We practice what we build. Our business model, partnerships, and daily decisions reflect the same flourishing we help others create.

Evidence-Informed

The science of human flourishing guides our work — a rich and growing body of research on how humans thrive that grounds every methodology, program, and tool we design.

Inclusive

Every form of human identity and every living system carries its own genius — character virtues, strengths, and a deep drive to flourish. This is the foundation of every program, tool, and experience we design.

Creative

We believe creativity is the spark that turns insight into transformation. We design with imagination, experiment with courage, and treat every challenge as an invitation to invent something the world hasn't seen yet.

Sustainable

We build for long-term transformation. Every engagement creates capacity that compounds over time — in people, organizations, and communities.

Flourishing-Centered

Flourishing is our design objective. When conventional approaches serve it, we use them. When they don't, we design something better.

Failure-Proof

We treat life and work as a continuous series of high-energy prototypes. Every setback is field data — information that calibrates and refines our next move toward flourishing.

4 Living Labs.

1 Approach: Flourishing-Centered Design (FCD)

Introducing Flourish51’s 4 Living labs : Dynamic spaces that continuously learn from & evolve with the people they serve

  1. LIFE DESIGN @ The GEM Lab— Lifelong tools to design a life that feels coherent, energizing, and unmistakably your own — designed with intention, sustained across every season.

  2. ORGANIZATIONAL DESIGN @ THRIVE Lab Measurable performance, retention, and growth — driven by a flourishing culture, venture, or community.

  3. GLOBAL FLOURISHING EXPEDITIONS @ GEM Journeys— Life-changing insights from around the world for a transformed understanding of how to live well

  4. FCD FOR YOUTH @ Flourishing Youth Academy—A generation of young people with the self-knowledge, life skills, and leadership capacities to thrive in a world that demands all three.

  • The GEM Lab

Where individual flourishing gets designed from the inside out at every season of a human life—from emerging adults, families, mid-life redesigners, and elders designing their legacy.

  • The THRIVE LAB

A space for ventures of all sizes—from start ups to re-designs of businesses, nonprofits, projects, products or services—to ignite human potential by intentionally designing flourishing into the systems. ‍

  • GEM Journey

Curated learning expeditions into the world's living cultures of flourishing. Bespoke and structured as ethnographic research to gain insights into what it means to flourish. GEM Journeys bring small groups to real places for durable impact.

  • Flourishing Youth Academy

FYA is how Flourish51’s labs extend into youth. FYA teaches flourishing-centered life & venture design to young people (ages 11–26) at the stages where identity and direction are being shaped.

 Why Flourishing Matters Now

The world is not flourishing. The data makes it clear.

  1. Performance without flourishing is unstable.

    • Disengagement, distress, and loneliness eventually erode productivity, trust, and retention.

  2. Prevention is a design challenge.

    • Belonging, agency, and meaning can be shaped by environments, rituals, policies, and systems.

  3. Flourishing is measurable.

    • We now have enough evidence to design toward it with intention instead of treating it as a soft byproduct.

Youth Well-being

Gen Z Reports the Lowest Mental Well-Being of Any Adult Generation

A majority of young people report a low sense of purpose and high anxiety about the future — including climate and economic uncertainty.

Well-being @ Work

$8.9 Trillion/year Costs of Employee Disengagement

The evidence shows that most employees are snot thriving. Organizations can have strong strategy and talent yet experience performance dips due to employee stress and disengagement.

Global & country-level flourishing

GDP growth alone does not produce flourishing.

Countries can be economically strong yet socially fragmented or psychologically strained. No country has achieved consistently high flourishing across all life domains.

  • 1 in 7 adolescents lives with a mental health condition

    WHO

  • 70% of mental health conditions begin before age 18 — most go untreated

    WHO

  • Global studies show declining life satisfaction among youth, especially in high-income nations

  • 21% of employees globally are engaged at work

    Gallup, 2024

  • 44% report experiencing stress daily — a near-record high

    Gallup, 2024

  • 1 in 5 feels lonely at work, even in team environments

    Gallup

  • $9 trillion lost annually to disengagement & poor wellbeing

  • Only 25% of people globally are considered "thriving"- doing well across happiness, health, relationships, meaning, and financial security

    Gallup World Poll

Flourishing-Centered Design

Flourishing-Centered Design (FCD)

FCD blends Human-Centered Design’s (HCD) creative problem-solving with the science of human flourishing and the genius of biomimicry to build thriving and resilient lives, organizations, products, and communities.

3 Fields of Knowledge

  1. The Science of Human Flourishing: The data and psychology behind what makes humans feel genuinely fulfilled, deeply connected, and mentally resilient.

  2. Human-Centered Design: The practice of building things with people, not just for them—making sure tools, spaces, or programs actually solve real-world problems.

  3. Biomimicry: Looking to nature for answers. It means copying the deeply tested, sustainable survival strategies of plants, animals, and natural ecosystems to solve human problems.

4 Premises

  1. Human systems are designed, and therefore redesignable.

  2. Flourishing is the goal, and strengths are the starting material.

  3. Nature is a design guide.

  4. Human variation is the baseline; everyone is original by design.

  • Harvard's 2025 landmark Global Flourishing Study ranked Indonesia, Mexico, and the Philippines among the highest in flourishing, showing that some middle-income countries outperform richer nations on meaning, relationships, and pro-social life.

  • The UN's Sustainable Development Goal #3 GOOD HEALTH AND WELL-BEING: By 2030, ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages

  • The world is well below “51% flourishing"— the goal put forth in 2011. This gap represents billions of people living with preventable ill‑health, underused potential, and unstable livelihoods.

  • Raising flourishing to 51% globally would mean billions more people with the health, skills, and stability to participate fully in economies—expanding markets, strengthening tax bases, and reducing the costs of conflict, displacement, and social unrest.

  • As of 2025, no country has yet achieved high levels of flourishing across all central domains of life.

    Harvard Global Flourishing Study

  • Flourishing is a urgent public health priority that cannot wait. Investing in human flourishing today leads to a future of innovation, leadership, and strong social cohesion.

—The 2051 Moonshot—

51% of Humanity Flourishing by 2051.

The 2051 moonshot requires a cross‑sector coalition so that every classroom, workplace, clinic, app, street, and household becomes a vital piece of the solution.
